01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

For an unpretentious evening gathered around a charcoal brazier or hotplate, taking time over juicy meat and drinks, ZASSO near Nakameguro Station offers something a little different. The menu first makes a strong case for the beef you would expect from a yakiniku restaurant. Its signature dish, the most popular special wagyu fresh harami, is prized for its melt-in-the-mouth texture. Other classic choices include fragrant salt-seasoned tongue, lean upper-loin with a clean savoury flavour, and geta kalbi, which can also be served tsukimi-style, dipped in egg. There is plenty of offal, too: fatty beef intestines, including shimacho and marucho, alongside yan and galla, whose pleasingly chewy textures add variety.

Exotic meats for the curious

Another major attraction at ZASSO is its varied selection of meats grouped under the name “Exotic”. The crocodile sirloin is mild and has a quality reminiscent of white fish; frog legs have a light flavour similar to chicken tenderloin; and ostrich thigh has a clean finish closer to lean beef. These are ingredients that can be hard to come across in everyday dining. The selection also includes Ezo deer and lamb, as well as a platter combining several varieties. Sharing and comparing them with friends makes for lively table conversation.

A hideaway for late-night drinks

Alongside beer for a first toast, the drinks list includes wine, spirits such as whisky, and shochu. ZASSO stays open from the evening until 6:00 the following morning, making it an option both for a substantial dinner and for a late-night drink or an after-party. In its homely, slightly atmospheric surroundings, settle in with a favourite drink and take your time grilling something that catches your eye.
